I Feel Less Deaf When I’m Dancing…. Not More So
Although I am not the only Deaf dancer in the world by any means...
“Hi i hope youre well. I have a question. How're u able to teach dance choreography if you're deaf? I'm intrigued as I've never heard of this before. Hope u don't mind me asking as I'm guessing u get loads of people asking this exact question”
My Reply:
I do get this question a lot but… There is no way for anyone to learn about other cultures, perspectives or lives if not to ask, so any time someone is kind enough to ask something nicely, I feel giddy at the chance to make a new friendship with a fellow Word Nerd.
Although I am not the only Deaf dancer in the world by any means (so it’s not only worth your Google-as-a-verb, but I’d also suggest watching shows like Deaf U on Netflix, which shows a wide variety of Deaf humans- as well as our obsessive love of music and beat- and how our upbringing and family, founding-culture, rate of hearing loss, and exposure to ASL enormously influences who we are). But here’s one thing that even Deaf people forget:
